VIDEO INTERVIEW – Young Guns

Posted September 28, 2010

On the current cover of Rocksound Magazine, hailed as one of the hot bands of 2010, Young Guns are definitely where it’s at. Their rise in popularity has caught a few of the music critics out, proving once and for all that the FANS dictate what they like, not THE MAN.

Their debut album “All Our Kings are Dead” went top 3 in the Indie AND Rock charts, and the band’s new single Weight of the World is released on 1st November – video below!

So in light of all this excitement, we thought it was time to catch up with frontman Gus at the recent Artsfest Event in Birmingham!

You can catch them at The HMV Institute on 24th November – along with The Swellers

Tickets (£8.50 adv. available here http://bit.ly/aonvvd)

This week with Birmingham Promoters

Posted September 27, 2010

Hello!

We hope you had a good week and weekend!

First we have to commend Pulled Apart by Horses, The JCQ and Blacklisters (+ DJ’s &U&I) for truly hot, sweaty and phenomenal show at The Flapper on Thursday night! It was, as predicted, carnage.

Photographer Mark Salmon took some great pictures: slideshow here: http://bit.ly/9El8TX

Thank you to you if you came along – the crowd made the evening complete!

The Tommy Reilly show at the Rainbow was also a great night. Local support Abi and Howard James Kenny brought a brilliant crowd along – and everyone had a cracking time. (Apart from our Rhi who has developed a wee small crush on the Scottish singer and had been hoping to woo him during his time here – but was, unfortunately unsuccessful!)

Also thank you to Electric Circus + Mr Mistoffelees and The Turn + Old Ions + The Valuable Fools who all played the Flapper over the weekend!

Elsewhere HUGE congratulations to Surface Festival – they sold out the O2 Indigo in London for their national showcase final Saturday just gone – what an achievement!

So, now onto this week …

Electro/new wave outfit Detachments tick all the right boxes.

http://www.myspace.com/detachments

Not only was their album produced by Trevor Jackson, Tim Goldsworthy and Andrew Weatherall, but the single
FLOWERS THAT FELL was Radio 1′s Lamacqs Alternative Single Of The Week and NME hailed it one of “10 Tracks You Have To Hear This Week”. It’s also had the remix treatment by Toronto’s Parallels (Crystal Castles collaborator) and has gone supersonic on the dancefloors world-wide.

Indie alt band Decades – from Birmingham – are influenced by the likes of Interpol and Joy Division.

On Friday

O. CHILDREN and At The Zoo The Flapper, Birmingham

The new-wave revival takes a decidely late 80′s gothic turn with O.Children – a band that harks back to the The Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus side of things – they are definitely going to put on something special this week!

http://www.myspace.com/ochildren

Made up of former members of Bono Must Die, O.Children provide all the swirling guitars and moodiness of the best gothic bands plus a singer with a velvety deep baritone. It works … enjoy it.

They’ve toured with Los Campesinos!, played Swn Festival 09, were part of Huw Stephens’ ‘Happy Huw Year’ Tour, have supported Teeth Mountain and Lovvers, and have featured on BBC Radio Wales and in the NME.

Made up of members (or past members) of The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, Attack + Defend, Fredrick Stanley Star, and Them Squirrels they certainly have the heritage to deliver.

This week with Birmingham Promoters

Posted September 22, 2010
Hello there!
Well first we have to give a mention to the Pope … spending a bit of time in our great city at the weekend!  Shame we couldn’t get him down to see Delta Spirit  … he would have loved them I’m sure.
Talking of Sunday nights gig, a big thank you to all the bands (Delta Spirit, Nathaniel Rateliffe and This Love Affair) plus you, if you turned up for a great evening’s music.
Also thank you to The Brute Chorus who ripped it up at The Flapper on Friday – and to the support bands Black Market Empire and Soldier. What a way to kick off a weekend eh?
Of course we have to give a big mention to the HMV Institute, which opened it’s doors on Saturday night to Birmingham’s great and good. Carnage is not the word – Birmingham can only benefit from having another great club and venue!
Right onto this week and one of our bands have been TV stars this week … Failsafe
They were the feature band in this weeks episode of the Inbetweeners after winning a competition! Nice one!
They’re playing the Flapper on 7th November along with Templeton Pek and Invade the Arcade.  Get yourself there …

On Thursday – Pulled Apart by Horses + The James Cleaver Quintet + &U&I DJ Set

Tickets are £7 advance available here: http://bit.ly/aonvvd
We are so excited about this evening – all the band involved recently shook the Flapper during the Off the Cuff Festival and all the signs are pointing to more chaos this evening.
Pulled Apart by Horses are getting support from Radio 1(including Mr new music himself, Zane Lowe) and are definitely a band to keep an eye on.  The band who the Guardian called the “brutal, noisy, fun”, have a new self titled album out now.

The JCQ are a law unto themselves – mixing psychobilly/hardcore and punk and, as with the headliners, earning a fierce reputation live.
We are also glad to have &U&I on DJ duties for the night (ex-Blakfish) this band have a reputation for bringing the party so get yourself down here

*****************************************************

On Friday – Electric Circus and Mr Mistoffelees at The Flapper

£5 on the door!
Midlands based trio Electric Circus being their classic rock / blues and indie sound to the Flapper on Friday night – and they’re well worth popping down for! With a determination to break into the Birmingham scene, this could be your chance to see them in those early stages!

*****************************************************

On Saturday – The Turn, Old Ions and The Valuable Fools at The Flapper

£5 on the door!

Birmingham’s own The Turn channel the collective spirits of Bonham, Moon, Gallagher and Ashcroft!! With a collection of catchy tunes, The Turn deliver their breed of indie-rock with a tight sound.
Support comes from Old Ions and The Valuable Fools

*****************************************************

Any additional information needed for any of the above or if you fancy a chat about anything feel free to get in contact with promoters Carlo or Rhiannon on facebook or by email: carlo/rhiannon@birminghampromoters.com :-)

Many Thanks and hope to see you at some point this week!

TV Talent shows …. when is it ok to like them?

Posted September 15, 2010

Over the past 10 years television has been dominated by the Talent Show – basically a televised version of the cringing displays of showing off and bragging that were once restricted to the holiday camp.

Now, though, everyone is being allowed to humiliate themselves in front of a MASS audience – whether it’s ear-bleeding singing, laughable dancing or ridiculous Fererro Roche eating.

Which is a shame because it’s now lumped tap dancing and baton-twirling in with the real musicians who could have a proper shot at fame.

Thankfully someone out there realised there was still an outlet for this  - cue the Mobile Unsigned Act (Orange Unsigned). At last, some decent musical talent and not a leotard or ice sculpture in sight.

The 2008 competition was won by Birmingham’s very own Envy and Other Sins – Scottish singer songwriter Tommy Reilly was the winner in 2009.

Tommy was an unusual winner for several reasons. He didn’t have the glitz and glamour of the indie band, he wasn’t high fashion, no Toni and Guy haircuts or designer gear. He was simply a normal guy singing great songs. The judges on the show – Lauren Laverne, Alex James and Simon Gavin – loved him and he walked away with a recording contract with Universal Music.

Now signed to Euphonius, he released his second album, “Hello I’m Tommy Reilly” earlier this year.

Catch him at the  Rainbow on the 22nd September  - tickets here

Listen to more of his music here: http://www.myspace.com/tommyreillymusic
